# Payday Loan Affordability Checker

A payday loan is repaid in one lump sum from your next paycheck. Before you borrow, check whether that repayment actually fits — honestly.

**This checks your budget, not your approval odds.** A loan that passes here can still be wrong if the need isn't urgent — and a lender may approve a loan you genuinely can't afford. The buffer matters: aim to keep at least a few hundred dollars after repayment for the unexpected.

This tool shows what a short-term lender thinks you can afford. That is not the same as what you can actually repay without bleeding your checking account dry. Before you trust the number on screen, understand what it leaves out.

### What Lenders Mean by "Affordable"

- They check your stated income. They rarely verify your actual expenses.
- "Affordability" covers the single payment, not the loan's total cost over multiple rollovers.
- The tool's result is a maximum offer, not a recommendation.
- State laws cap fees, but not always effectively—some borrowers still pay triple-digit equivalent costs.
- Your rent, groceries, and gas do not disappear just because a loan payment fits mathematically.

## How do I use this calculator?

Enter your monthly gross income and your existing debt payments. The tool spits out a maximum loan amount. That's it. No magic, no deep analysis of your life.

Here is the problem: it treats all leftover money as available for debt. It does not know your kid needs asthma medication, your car transmission is grinding, or your hours got cut last month. You must subtract your real expenses yourself. The tool won't do it for you.

## What number should I actually trust?

Trust your own math, not the tool's headline figure.

Write down every dollar that leaves your account in a typical month. Not just bills—coffee, bus fare, the leak in your bathroom ceiling you've been patching. Whatever remains after *that* is your true maximum payment. If the tool offers more, say no. Borrowing the max is how two-week loans become six-month traps.

If the tool says you qualify for a loan larger than your emergency fund, ask yourself: who benefits when I max out?

## Where do the real costs hide?

They hide in repetition.

A single payday loan looks simple: you borrow, you repay next payday, done. But [what if you can't repay](/guides/what-if-you-cant-repay/)? Most borrowers cannot. They roll over or re-borrow. Each time, fresh fees apply. The tool shows you the first fee. It does not show you fee number four or eight.

The tool also hides opportunity cost. Every dollar in fees is a dollar not buying groceries, not fixing your car, not building a buffer. That cost is real even if it never appears on screen.

## Should I even use this tool?

Use it as a warning, not an invitation.

Follow this checklist before accepting any loan amount:

1. Subtract your *actual* monthly expenses from your take-home pay. Use bank statements, not memory.
2. Set aside a buffer for surprises—because they arrive whether you plan for them or not.
3. Compare the remaining number to the tool's suggested payment. If they differ, trust the smaller one.
4. Check [cheaper alternatives](/alternatives/) before committing: credit unions, employer advances, payment plans with creditors.
5. If you still need the loan, borrow the minimum, not the maximum.

The tool is honest about the math it performs. It is silent about the math it ignores.

## What if the tool says I can't afford anything?

Believe it. That is data working in your favor.

A declined affordability check hurts your pride. Accepting an unaffordable loan hurts everything else. Payday lenders profit from borrowers who override their own judgment. The tool's "no" is protection, not failure.

If you need cash and the tool blocks you, that signals your budget is already stretched past safety. [Look elsewhere](/alternatives/)—family, community programs, selling assets, extra work. These options embarrass people. They also do not trap you in debt cycles.

## Frequently asked questions

Why does the tool say I can afford more than my gut says?

Because it uses gross income and estimated expenses, not your actual spending. It assumes you have no emergencies, no unpredictable costs, no life. Override it with your own budget reality.

Will passing this check guarantee I get approved?

No. Affordability checks are one step. Lenders still run their own risk assessments, verify income, and check state databases. Passing this tool only means you passed this tool—nothing more.

The tool approved me but I know I'm broke. What now?

Close the tab. A tool cannot see your overdrawn account, your pending utility shutoff, or your empty gas tank. If you know the money is not there, you know more than any algorithm. [Learn what happens if you can't repay](/guides/what-if-you-cant-repay/) before you test that knowledge the hard way.

*Last updated: affordability tools change. The psychology of lenders does not.*
